Scotty McCreery picked Garth Brooks’ The River, and he gets Don Was — who has produced Garth — to record his studio version. Was says Scotty’s a natural storyteller. Jimmy Iovine hopes he’ll step out of the country zone. Tonight, though, he’s sticking with what he knows. Scotty’s singing it very much like Garth, with the little twists and breaks he gives the melody. There’s a lot of room to play melodically when you’re doing that, but, when you’re off, it sounds horrible. And Scotty isn’t always on. Fortunately, he hits the breakdown strong, singing against just the drums. Frankly, it’s one of the night’s weakest performances, but it’s not enough of a disaster to put Scotty in any danger. Will the judges call him out? “If it ain’t broke, don’t even think about fixing it,” says Randy. “Dude, this is exactly where you belong.” Steven, whose Rodeo Garth once covered, says he did “The Garth” justice. “I saw you open up as a performer,” Jennifer tells him. “Now, you’re taking us all on the ride with you. This after noon and tonight, even past 12am I can’t stop watching videos of you singing on American Idol! You sing so much better than Garth Brooks and Travis Tritt. After listening to their versions after listening to you, you take the cake man! Scotty, you have warmth and love in your voice and personality.Girls luv that! It is already November 2011, and this is the one song I have to hear again, as well as “Gone” he sang on American Idol. That was really PRICELESS!!! Awesome!! I love the way you can really entertain as you sing Scotty! As I said, it is all Priceless!!! Unique!!!!

Scotty you have so much emotion, in your voice, along with how you let it out so naturally. And I love your body language along with it! The way you stood there holding your arm with the words “I will sail my vesel till the river runs dry “. With that deep voice, I nove it. I listen to your songs repeatedly, you really sound good!!

If I were offered the choice to hear Scotty or Garth sing this song live, there would be no hesitation. I would choose to hear Scotty any day. He can soar with the best of um and like J Lo says he takes us soaring along for the ride.

@amaina123 I heard the original Garth version today on a road trip and it soared. This sounds like a kite that keeps rolling in the wind and bouncing off the ground. Sorry for having perfect pitch….it’s a curse. and it was LitZena who claimed to have voted as many times as she could in the time allowed…perhaps she is six. Believe me I like Scott-y McCreery, but he did not win this by talent. by popularity for sure. Steven Tyler was being nice…probably never even heard Garth.
